HISTORY

Friends of Beck's Mill, Inc. was organized by Awareness Washington County Class of 2005. Awareness Washington County is a Servant Leadership Program  that runs from  September  until  May of each year. Each year's class chooses a servant  leadership  project in  which to serve  the community and practice their skills. While the class  was contemplating a project, an article appeared in the local  newspaper in January, 2005 about  Beck's  Mill. With  the mill in mind, the class set about to organize the Friends  of Beck's Mill. As it happened to be, D. Jack Mahuron had been meeting with Don and Joyce Andersen, and Joyce Allen as to the possibility of acquiring the mill for  restoration.  The Friends  of  Beck’s  Mill  accepted  the challenge of looking into the possibility of a restoration project.

At about the same time, The Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana announced its 10 most   endangered  landmarks  within   the   state   of  Indiana  for  2005.   Beck's  Mill   in Washington County  made the  list. The accelerating deterioration  could mean that photos could soon be the only record of Beck's Mill as it once was.

However, there is good news! In November, 2005, the owners of Beck's Mill, Don and Joyce Andersen, donated  14  acres and  the Mill to Friends of Beck's Mill, Inc. Joyce  Andersen is from the seventh generation of the Beck family and  her mother, Joyce Allen, still remains on the property adjacent to the Mill.

Through the efforts of grants, donations, and fundraising, Friends of Beck's Mill's goal is to fully restore Beck's Mill to the way it operated in the late 1800's.

GREAT NEWS!   THE FRIENDS OF BECK’S MILL IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT BILL AND GAYLE COOK HAVE  OFFERED TO FUND THE RESTORATION OF BECK’S MILL! Play the Barry Bernson Report at...  http://wdrb.dayport.com/viewer/viewerpage.php?Art_ID=10871&Category_ID=3
